The 68th convocation ceremony at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, was marked by the announcement of the establishment of IIT Malaysia campus. The director of IIT Kharagpur, VK Tewari, emphasized the institute’s goal to become a global benchmark in education excellence. He highlighted the significance of setting up IIT Malaysia as a major step towards establishing a global footprint and promoting Indian standards of education internationally.
Tewari expressed the institute’s commitment to showcasing the ‘brand India’ through the new overseas campus, linking it to initiatives like the Atma Nirbhar Bharat policy. He emphasized the need for active government engagement in narrating India’s story, particularly in the realms of rejuvenating the industrial sector and advancing education.
A committee, in collaboration with Indian missions abroad, identified potential locations for offshore campuses under the “Indian International Institute of Technology” brand name. These locations include the UK, UAE, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Malaysia, and Thailand.
During the convocation, a total of 1574 UG, 998 PG, 24 MS, and 429 research scholars, including 374 PhD (with 31 PhD Joint), were awarded degrees. The institute recognized achievements across various disciplines, such as LLB, MTech, MMST, MHRM, MCP, MBA, LLM, EMBA, MTech Dual Degree, MSc and MTech, BTech (Hons), BArch (Hons), five-year integrated MSc, three-year MSc, and two-year MSc degrees.
Notable accolades were presented, including the President of India Gold Medal for the best academic performance to A Jaaneshwaran in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering, and the Prime Minister of India Gold Medal to Shouharda Ghosh in the same department for outstanding academic performance among Dual Degree and Integrated MSc outgoing students. The Bidhan Chandra Roy Memorial Gold Medal for the best all-round performance was awarded to Abhay Shukla in Industrial and System Engineering with a Minor in Computer Science and Engineering.
